Just in case you thought we only had Heidelberg presses, here is a teeny one that lives on the reception desk. It is a miniature wooden handpress, ancestor to the Heidelbergs.

Letterpress printer Mike has a special attachment to Bella Figura’s Charmed NY design! If you could hear the man speak you’d know that’s his hometown. Viva New York!

July 1st was our monthly Boxcar potluck where we cook for each other and talk with those we don’t see too often. We feasted, we laughed, we cried (with laughter), we were serenaded by printer Dave, a true renaissance man. Not only is he a letterpress printer, he’s also a carpenter, a motorcyclist, a glass etcher, good joke teller, and as we were lucky enough to find out, a talented crooner, guitarist, & harmonica player- all at the same time! Kudos to you, Dave!

Here at Boxcar Press we are dedicated to making the world a better place and providing our customers with the finest quality letterpress stationery items. Recently we’ve been able to combine our two loves on a couple of special projects. (We’re sure other letterpress shops are out there supporting causes they believe in too. Post a comment and tell us what you’re doing, or email us at info@boxcarpress.com so we can promote you in future blog posts.)
If you follow this blog regularly, you may recall that we donated the printing for this Tara Hogan (of Ink + Wit)-designed card earlier this year. The sanctuary “provides shelter to cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, sheep and goats who have been rescued from cases of abuse, neglect and abandonment.” It promotes the respectful, humane treatment of animals and the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. Learn more by visiting their website:www.woodstocksanctuary.org.
Our friends at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary liked the cards so much they called and asked if they could buy more! We were happy to do the job (who doesn’t love cows and pigs and sheep?) and extend them a discount in recognition of the great work they do. To learn more about the Sanctuary see our January 24th blog post.
(Boxcar Kids* modeling the tee shirts sent as a thoughtful thank you from the kind folks at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary.)
We recently received this message from Greta Gladney, Executive Director of the Renaissance Project: “I cannot begin to tell you how much pride we take in using our new stationery. We appreciate Boxcar’s craftsmanship, commitment to sustainability and support of our work.”
“The mission of the Renaissance Project is poverty alleviation and improving the quality of life in New Orleans’ low-income African American communities by implementing programs and supporting partnerships in the areas of food access, education, economic development and the arts.” (from the mission statement of The Renaissance Project)
We printed their letterhead, envelopes and business cards at a discount. The identity package was designed by the talented folks at Big Tada in New Orleans.
The letterhead is letterpress printed in silver and navy ink on the front and features a map offset printed in silver on the back. The same navy and silver are used on both sides of the letterpress business cards. Crane Lettra Fluorescent White papers and envelopes served as the canvas for this handsome identity suite.

This fella has been following us for years from the last space to where we are now. Guarding our ink wall steadily, she has officially earned mascot status!

Chris, Stan, Dave & Jim are a mighty force running their Heidelberg Windmill letterpress machines.

Heidelberg Windmill,
You are a glorious workhorse!
With you, so many wonderful things can be letterpressed & die cut & scored.
I love you, windmill! And all of the other presses too!

Printing for the Cloudy Collection is, hands down, one of the coolest things we get to do around here. Recently we had the sincere privilege of printing this cool art print, Monster Parade, created by Ed Emberley exclusively for the Cloudy Collection. Printed in green, red, dark blue, and black the print comes in a custom folder, with metallic silver printing on black paper. Each of the prints and folders in the edition of 250 is hand-numbered on the back and is available now to ship anywhere around the globe. A portion of the sales of these prints will go to Heifer International, providing reliable sources of food to women and families in developing nations, and to the Central Asia Institute, which provides books and literacy and educational opportunities to girls and women in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
This past weekend we held our traditional Earth Day Clean-Up, rounding up the troops to spend a bit of time cleaning up the area around our building in downtown Syracuse and the local neighborhood. Armed with sunny skies, brooms and trash bags, the crew was off and cleaning! Nothing says spring like a little spring cleaning. Big thanks to our youngest helpers, Francesa and Max, for spending the day with us and making this year’s Earth Day Clean-Up so much fun.
We hope you enjoy this new movie of Boxcar Press’s printshop, beautifully filmed and edited last week by Daylight Blue Media. Music is by local composer Marc Mellits.
