In addition to the supreme dedication and wonderful personalities of the people in finishing, there is also a continual art show on Nancy! Her incredible ocean scenery has been a work in progress for years. She thanks Rick at Halo heartily for putting it there. I thank her for wearing it so well!

So Wonderful
Here is a plate mounted on our Boxcar base. Lou’s letterpress is singing in pool ink today, a lovely deep blue. Hearing the press run never gets old.
A day in our Letterpress Shop: Blooming Flowers
Flowers are blooming all over in the Smock area! Using the pollen pattern gift wrap (which is 2 sided), Jen has made this amazing, huge, beautiful display piece. So many ideas, only 24 hours in a day!
Reason #196,287,375 we love Syracuse
We’re constantly finding cool things around Syracuse, and we love to see exciting new things happening in the area. Lots of independent businesses are springing up, there’s a great push to buy local products, and some new public art displays are just a few of the things we’re diggin’ these days.
So, needless to say, we were beyond psyched to find out that Syracuse First – a local nonprofit dedicated to getting the people of Syracuse to think, buy & be local by supporting independent businesses within the community – did a great feature on us here at Boxcar Press! Visit the Syracuse First Blog to see the full profile, and check out their website to find other great businesses around here.
We thought we’d share some of our favorite Syracuse First businesses – if you’re in the area, check them out!
- Freedom of Espresso: A great coffee shop – they supply the coffee that keeps our company moving!
- Farmshed CNY – A great app for your phone that puts local CNY food producers at your fingertips.
- Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo – The zoo is a popular hangout for the Boxcar babies!
- Lilipad Creations – A line of funky handmade bags (and one of our neighbors in the Delavan Center!)
- Syracuse Soapworks – Fantastic soaps made just down the street.
Big thanks again to Syracuse First for the awesome feature!
Another Splendid Press!
Just in case you thought we only had Heidelberg presses, here is a teeny one that lives on the reception desk. It is a miniature wooden handpress, ancestor to the Heidelbergs.

Flat Printing
Here is another one of our presses that does flat printing AKA offset printing. It is a printing method where the inked plate presses against a rubber blanket that then offsets the ink onto the paper.
Tony (an offset printer) has printed 2 different patterned backings in tangerine and aubergine.

First Friday Potluck
July 1st was our monthly Boxcar potluck where we cook for each other and talk with those we don’t see too often. We feasted, we laughed, we cried (with laughter), we were serenaded by printer Dave, a true renaissance man. Not only is he a letterpress printer, he’s also a carpenter, a motorcyclist, a glass etcher, good joke teller, and as we were lucky enough to find out, a talented crooner, guitarist, & harmonica player- all at the same time! Kudos to you, Dave!

Spooky Spider Letterpress for The Pink Orange
We printed these letterpress Halloween cards featuring a cool little spider for our good friend Rebecca Ashby of The Pink Orange. We love a good letterpress card for all occasions around here and Halloween is no exception.
Available now at The Pink Orange’s online shop.
Spring Cleaning – When the Fridge Attacks
Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes at a letterpress print shop? Consider today your lucky day. We’ve been so busy printing lately that our fridge has long sat sadly neglected, piled high with the remnants of delicious meals past. When we could stand it no longer, we decided a little spring cleaning was in order. It took two brave souls over an hour of diligently scraping dishes and checking expiration dates, but the Boxcar Press fridge is no longer a dark and scary place. Good thing we compost – we filled our compost bin right up!
