We’re so thrilled to see how many people participated in our Facebook contest last week – we had over 70 entries, and a lot of really great guesses! It came pretty close, but we found a winner: Jillian Contreni Sokso!
Jillian is a printmaker - not exclusively letterpress, but mixed media prints, usually making one-of-a-kind works of art. She teaches printmaking in the art department at Houghton College, which is in the southern tier of New York state. She also makes quite a few artist’s books, too – check out her website to see some of her amazing work!
Congratulations to Jillian, and thank you to everyone who participated!!!
Here at Boxcar Press, we (along with Smock + Bella Figura) are nearing our 10,000th job – and we want to celebrate with you! In honor of this milestone, we’re hosting a contest on Facebook, and it’s really easy to enter. Just visit our Facebook page, ‘like’ us, and comment on our post – give your guess for when the 10,000th job will come in, and the closest guess will win the choice of $100 off their next custom printing order, or $100 to spend on amazing eco stationery good from Smock!

Thanks to everyone who entered our Crazy Press Moving Contest. We were blown away by the bravery, courage, and creativity that letterpress printers muster up when forced to move really, really heavy equipment. We’ll be announcing the winner, and honorable mentions, with the next issue of Flurry (sometime in October). Until then, enjoy the suspense! Thanks to everyone for sharing their stories.
Two more days to submit your Craziest Press Moving story ever. If you don’t have a story of your own…don’t despair. You have 48 hours to hunt down a letterpress, bring a camera, take a few deep breaths, and go wild. (Submit your story, or read the adventures of other press movers, here).

Flurry (a new online journal about letterpress printers) needs you. In particular, Flurry needs your press moving stories. And not just that time when you hired riggers and everything went really smoothly. Post a comment telling us (in 50 words or less) what crazy things your love for letterpress has caused you to do with really heavy machinery (or, if you’re shy, email us (liftgate@boxcarpress.com). How far were you willing to go for your cast iron beauty? Madness, adrenaline, photos, reenactments, and adventure are all encouraged. The best story will win the right of first refusal for Harold Kyle’s *free* 2-ton Miehle Vertical press. This press has brand new rollers, as well as typical rust and dirt issues as you’d expect with any mid-century press. It’s guaranteed to provide you with an exciting press moving story all over again! You’ll also receive fame and a Boxcar letterpress t-shirt featuring your choice of press (Vandercook; Windmill; C&P; or Sigwalt). And we’ll feature the best stories in an upcoming article on Flurry. Post or email your best in 50 words or less by August 20.
The medallion hunt is over! Though it’s sad to bid farewell to those pretty little medallions hidden throughout our site, let’s applaud our winners — these incredible adventurers who scoured page after page and emerged victorious with five Boxcar medallions in their teeth. We’ll be sending these folks a choose-your-press t-shirt along with lots of love. Thanks for playing along. Congratulations, ye letterpress lovers!
