This is an account of two hikes through the Switzerland mountains that my husband Harold and I did in September, 2004, combining parts of the Alpine Pass Route through the Bernese Oberland, and a few parts of the Haute Route in the Valiasian Alps. Before we left, I loved reading about other hikers’ experiences online as they traversed Switzerland by foot – so I’m excited to add my journal to the mix!

This was our itenerary.

Part One: Engelbert to Kanderstag

• Day 1: Luzerne, train to Engelbert, lift to Trubse, hike to Engstlenalp. Overnight at the Berghaus Engstlenalp

• Day 2: Engstlenalp to Meiringen (hiking and lifts). Bus from Meiringen to Rosenlaui. Overnight at the Hotel Rosenlaui.

• Day 3. Bus from Rosenlaui to Schwarzwaldalp. Hike to the Faulhorn (known as Berhaus Faulhorn, or Berghotel Faulhorn), the highest hotel in Switzerland (8780 feet up) via Scheidegg Oberlaeger. Overnight at the Faulhorn

• Day 4: Faulhorn Inn to Schynige Platte, cog railway to Wilderswil, train to Lauterbrunnen, overnight at Hotel Staubbach

• Day 5: Lauterbrunnen bus to Stechelberg, hike to Obersteinberg (plus a little further to see the Oberhornsee), overnight at Hotel Obersteinberg

• Day 6: Obersteinberg to Stechelberg, bus to Latuerbrunnen, funicular to Grutschalp, hike to Murren, then to Bluemental, overnight at Pension Sonnenberg

• Day 7: Bluemental to Griesalp via the Sefinenfurke, overnight at the Hotel-Pension Waldrand at Pochtenalp

• Day 8: Pochtenalp to Frutigen to Kanderstag via bus and train, hike to Oeschinensee, overnight at Berghaus Am Oeschinensee


Part Two: The Valaisian Alps, Les Hauderes to Grachen

• Day 1: Sion bus to Villaz (via Les Hauderes), then hike to the stunning town of Grimentz. Overnight at the Hotel de Moiry

• Day 2: Day hike around Grimentz, overnight at the Hotel de Moiry

• Day 3: Grimentz to St. Luc, funicular up, then hike up to Hotel Weisshorn

• Day 4: Hotel Weisshorn to Gruben, via the Meidpass, overnight at the odd and awful Hotel Schwarzhorn

• Day 5: Gruben to Grachen, overnight at Hotel Stutz
